Essentials of Field Security Management – Beta version

This course, taught in English, guides you through the key steps of managing security in the field. It is based on accepted international standards such as ISO 31000, Good Practice Review No. 8 (2010) and key recommendations made by the Global Interagency Security Forum.

The course covers the essential knowledge and skills necessary to manage security well in the field. The course is built round a clear security management framework, and concentrates on both the technical and the soft skills required to be an effective security manager. How you will learn:

This is an online course with short daily learning chunks spread over 10 weeks. You will have access to videos, podcasts, interviews, documents, articles, websites and other resources. You will also take part in a learning ‘pod’ made up of other learners. At the end of each week you will be asked to carry out a short assignment to demonstrate your learning.

This course is for anyone who has technical responsibility for security in the field, whether they be a Security Manager, Security Focal Point, Programme Manager, Project Manager, Logistician. Human Resources and Finance leads working in the field will also benefit from taking this course. If you are a Country Director or Deputy Country Director you will also gain much insight from this detailed course. Your trainer:

The course is led by Ian Woodmansey. Ian has worked in the humanitarian and development worlds since the mid-1990s and has held numerous field, HQ, and consultancy positions with organisations ranging from Oxfam, Medecins Sans Frontieres, ICRC, Mercy Corps, GIZ, Tearfund and others. He was Country Director for RedR UK in Pakistan and South Sudan, and served for a number of years as RedR’s Global Security Manager and Lead Security Trainer. 

Ian has been training on security and crisis management since 2011. He has an MSc in Development Studies, is a member of the Security Institute, an Associate Member of the Business Continuity Institute and a Professional Member of the Institute of Operational Risk.
